CORONATION Street actor Andrew Whyment saw red when his opponents in a football match slammed the soap.

The star was over the moon after helping his non-league club Hardly Athletic to a 3-0 win against local rivals Boulton Wanderers.

But when Andrew, who has played Kirk Sutherland on Corrie for 18 years, went up to his opponents to congratulate them on their efforts, he was shocked to hear them tear into the ITV soap.

Boulton players later admitted Andrew, 36, was “not happy” with the remarks.

The club’s official Twitter account said: “After a tough 3-0 defeat the lads had time to reflect.

“It can now be concluded as the lads all agreed that Coronation Street is f ****** s***.’’

But the football-mad actor replied: “Haha – brilliant. I’m not bothered if you all think Corrie is s ***e.

“Just don’t think there was any need

® when I come over to say good game to all start telling me that.”

Boulton goalie Kien Macdonald sent a personal message to the Cobbles star to say sorry for the comments.

He wrote: “I apologise for my team mate with the large head as he is an a***hole.

“Well played tonight and good luck for the rest of the season.’’

Hardly’s victory sent them top of division two of the Leigh Sports Village Monday Night League. Boulton plummeted to the bottom. Corrie fans also defended Whyment and the soap on Twitter.

Nick wrote: “It’s your job Andy. Don’t let it get to you. Some people are just childish.’’ While Ali J messaged: “I’m sure the millions of viewers would disagree.”

The actor responded: “I get a lot of people telling me they think it’s s***e but I always think they must watch it to know who I am.’’ ON THE BALL: Whyment in action for amateur side Hardly Athletic
