I COULD HAVE BEATEN EU TOO RAPS GROVES

- by DECLAN TAYLOR

GEORGE GROVES has stepped up his war of words with Chris Eubank Jnr by insisting he would have beaten up his dad in his heyday.

Groves finally faces Eubank at Manchester Arena tomorrow in the World Boxing Super Series semi-final after months of verbal sparring.

Now the WBA supermiddleweight champion has taken aim at his famous father.

Eubank Snr won world titles at two different weights and is considered one of Britain’s best ever after a career which ended in 1998 following 52 fights and 45 wins.

But Groves says the eccentric former champ was lucky he was not around in those days.

“I haven’t seen much of his career, but I’m sure I would have beaten him,” said Groves.

“He had enough losses on his record and I don’t fall for his bulls**t. Back then, a lot of people got annoyed by his gimmicks and fought with emotion. I wouldn’t do that.

“He was about posturing, being heavy-handed. He probably wasn’t much of a trainer.”

Groves, who has lost three of his 30 fights to date, added: “It was a different era. Maybe he wouldn’t have survived in this era. Maybe he would have got beat. Maybe people would have seen through him because, in this era, you have to step up.”

Groves has also vowed to leave Eubank Snr unemployed by beating his son in Manchester.

He added: “I think it is quite clear what will happen once I win.

“I believe that he will sack his dad and move back down to middleweight.”

Groves v Eubank is live on ITV Box Office.
