A TRUCKER was turned down for a job interview – because he is British.

Shocked Michael Fowler, 39, said: “I was gobsmacked. I thought I must have read the advert wrong, but I hadn’t.”

® A TRUCKER has been turned down for a job interview because he is British.

Michael Fowler was told by a recruitment firm that Brit candidates were excluded.

The 39-year-old couldn’t believe he was excluded from a delivery job so close to where he lives. He said: “I thought I must have read the ad wrong, but I hadn’t.

“I was a bit shocked to apply for a job that’s eight miles from my house and not be able to go for it.

“I’ve been doing this job for 12 or 13 years and you get drivers from everywhere.” Mr Fowler, who lives with his partner Louise in Salisbury, Wilts, received an email from the Blu Global agency reading: “Hi Michael, are you British because our positions exclude British candidates?” The ad said applicants must be EU citizens with a good level of English. Blu Global said the email sender, a Ms Plamena Ivanoa, had been fired.

It added: “We refute any allegations that we, as a business, discriminate against our UK-based applicants. No candidate is denied a chance of employment based on their nationality, age, race, gender or sexual orientation. We will investigate this allegation.”
