PRINCE Harry and Meghan Markle were at the centre of an anthrax scare yesterday, sparking new royal wedding security fears.

A poison pen letter containing a mystery white powder sent to the couple was being treated as a race hate crime.

AN “anthrax” attack which targeted Meghan Markle sparked fears for her wedding.

Police are treating the sending of an envelope containing white powder to Kensington Palace as a “racist hate crime”.

The royal residence is home to Prince Harry and bride-tobe Meghan as well as Prince William, pregnant Princess Kate and their children George and Charlotte.

The powder was in a racist poison pen letter, sources said.

The letter was opened by a member of staff on February 12. Tests later confirmed that the powder was harmless.

A day later a similar package was sent to Home Secretary Amber Rudd at Westminster Palace. which was also found to be harmless.

Anthrax causes flu-like symptoms and then major respiratory difficulties and irreversible lung damage.

Now royal bosses are scrambling to tighten security even further around Harry and Meghan’s wedding on May 19.

Attack

As well as the Royal family, guests are likely to include Europe’s top royalty, ex US president Barack Obama and his wife Michelle and Canadian prime minister Justin Trudeau.

Harry and Meghan are also set to ride around a public route in a carriage after tying the knot at St George’s Chapel in Windsor Castle.

A Kensington Palace spokesman yesterday declined to comment on the hoax anthrax attack.

The white powder threat comes just months after a terror suspect allegedly spurred on jihadis to attack Prince George at school.

The 31-year-old suspect is set to face trial in April.

More than 5,000 police officers were involved in the security of Kate and William’s wedding in 2011, with taxpayers picking up a bill of more than £10million.

Meanwhile, Harry, Meghan, Kate and Wills are all set to dismiss their terror scare and put on a united front when they step out for their first joint engagement next week.

The two couples will take part in the first annual Royal Foundation Forum on Wednesday.
