Viewers described Ant as “anxious” and “panicky” as he made his return to the hit show following his marriage split and prescription drugs hell.
The popular Geordie, 42, looked red-faced and struggled to deliver some of his lines from the autocue as he appeared alongside Declan Donnelly. One concerned viewer posted: “Ant looks a bit anxious to me... a bit panicky – hope he’s ok.”
Another wrote on Twitter: “Ant just doesn’t look right someone help him!”
But other fans backed Ant as Takeaway trounced its Saturday night rivals, pulling in a whopping 7.6million viewers.
One tweeted: “Finally Ant and Dec are back! Ant’s looking well... was always my favourite, sorry Dec.” Another added: “Ant and Dec never fail to put a smile on my face.”
ITV said the audience peaked at 8.6m, dwarfing the 2.8m who tuned into flop BBC singing contest All Together Now.
It is the biggest opening episode rating Takeaway has enjoyed since its launch in 2005.
Reality TV star Scarlett Moffatt, 27, also made her return to the programme.

Scarlett’s family members and her new bodybuilder boyfriend Lee Wilkinson were in the audience to support her.
The show saw Ant and Dec, also 42, present an action-packed edition as they raced monster trucks.
Ant is going through a divorce from wife of 11 years Lisa Armstrong, 41, and had a stint in rehab to battle his prescription drug addiction.
In November he made his big telly comeback in an emotional reunion with Dec for the 17th series of I’m A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here!
A spokesman for Ant declined to make a comment last night.
