‘Stay indoors’ warning as killer freeze hits

BRITS have been warned “don’t go outside” as the nation plunges into an “historic” deep freeze colder than the Arctic Circle.

Widespread blizzards and temperatures down to -15C are forecast from early today.

BRITS have been warned “don’t go outside” as The Beast From The East freeze sweeps in.

The nation is preparing for “significant” snow, Siberian winds and -15C temperatures.

It will be colder than the Arctic Circle as up to 8in of snow over three days will spark transport mayhem, cut off rural communities and down power lines.

More than 500 gritters are on standby, while the AA is readying four-wheel-drive vehicles to reach stranded motorists.

A reversal of the jet stream is battering Britain with freezing air from Russia.

The wind chill factor will see parts of the UK feel as cold as -15C, rivalling temperatures forecast for areas of Norway far north of the edge of the Arctic Circle.

Public Health England warned Brits to stay warm and keep thermostats on 18C.

Dr Thomas Waite, of its Extreme Events team, said: “It’s critical that if you know anyone over 65, with young children or who has heart or lung conditions, that you keep an eye on them and think what help they may need.”

The Met Office has issued yellow warnings and an amber cold weather alert.

Alex Burkill, a Met Office meteorologist, said: “This weather event is probably going to be historic. The theme is very, very cold.”

Ladbrokes has suspended betting on this month being the coldest on record. Some parts of Europe could face -30C this week. Get hot in the freeze: P24-25
