CALL The Midwife is set to lose another cast member.

Just as fans recover from the tragic meningitis death of nurse Barbara Hereward (Charlotte Ritchie) on Sunday’s tearjerker, they will have to face the departure of another popular character.

Her telly husband Tom, played by Jack Ashton, is also set to leave the BBC drama.

The Poplar vicar will get the chance to move away in Sunday’s series finale and it seems he will accept it and move on.

Jack tells TV Times: “Tom gets an offer that may allow him to deal with his grief away from Poplar. He’s hanging up his dog collar for a bit.”

Asked if he would be back on the Taskmaster, The Horne Section show in the future, he added: “He could be back in the series after next but we shall see.”

In real life Jack is dating fellow Call The Midwife star Helen George, who plays Trixie.

She was given a break from the current show as she was pregnant with their baby daughter Wren.

And although Jack is about to depart, she is due to return for the next series.

The actor said: “When she goes back to film series eight, I’ll be ‘Daddy Daycare.’ ”

Sunday’s emotional episode drew an audience of 7.6million viewers making it the most watched show of the night. ¬

Call The Midwife’s series finale is on BBC One on Sunday at 8pm.
