TODAY is Internatio­nal Women’s Day 2018. It’s a time to promote women’s rights, celebrate female achievemen­ts and inspire gender equality movements.

The theme this year is #PressforPr­ogress and is based on a push for gender parity worldwide. And with increased celebrity support for the women’s movement thanks to the #metoo and #timesup campaigns, this year’s event has never been bigger.

Here JENNIFER DUNKERLEY brings you 12 fascinatin­g facts about women... The two highest IQ scores in recorded history belong to women. Women speak about 20,000 words a day. That’s 13,000 more than the average man. Men lie on average six times a day – twice as often as women. Last year’s Wonder Woman was the first superhero film starring a female lead. It’s also the highest grossing film to have been directed by a woman. Women are safer drivers than men. They are involved in fewer road accidents and have fewer penalty points on their licence. Some 57% of male drivers have been involved in at least one accident compared to 44% of women, according to carrentals.co.uk. Last year Taylor Swift, the youngest star on the Forbes Female Entertainm­ent Rich List, empowered women all around the world by winning a landmark lawsuit, suing a radio host who groped her bum for just $1. Taylor said she sought to make a public point that women should not have to endure unwanted physical contact. On average, women live two to five years longer than men, a fact which holds true in every country in the world. This isn’t limited to human beings. Female orangutans and chimpanzee­s also outlive their male counterpar­ts. Because of the high production of the hormone estrogen during puberty, girls’ brains generally mature two years earlier than those of boys. Women love sex just as much as men. In a recent survey, three quarters of the females polled said they wanted to romp at least three times a week. In Russia there are nine million more women than men. Women tolerate pain better than men. An episode of the show MythBuster­s showed that women can hold their hands in freezing water 19% longer than those crybaby men. Women make better leaders than men. Research has concluded that female-led companies are more successful than ones led by males. A poll found that the public agrees – women make fairer, more compassion­ate and more trustworth­y leaders than men do. A Canadian study also concluded that women make better doctors. It said female medics are much more likely than men to adhere to guidelines and to prescribe the right drugs.
