Court documents filed in Los Angeles say Mr Trump did not sign the hush agreement, “thus rendering it legally null and void and of no consequence”.

It adds: “The attempts to intimidate Ms Clifford into silence and ‘shut her up’ in order to ‘protect Mr Trump’ continue unabated.”

Ms Daniels’ lawyer, Michael Avenatti, said: “Mr Trump did not sign.

“We believe that was so that he could later claim deniability, and therefore, from a legal perspective, we believe she’s free to talk.”

Asked on US TV if she had a sexual relationship with the president, he replied: “Yes.”
