I’LL GIVE SCOTT ANOTHER SHOT

Frampton open to rematch

- By CHRIS McKENNA

CARL FRAMPTON told Scott Quigg he will get the chance to avenge his only defeat – if he becomes world champion this weekend.

Quigg, 29, faces WBO featherweight champion Oscar Valdez in Los Angeles on Saturday night.

The Bury boxer is looking to win his first world title since losing his WBA super-bantamweight crown to Frampton in February 2016.

That is the only loss in Quigg’s 37-fight career.

Crack

Frampton said at the time he had no interest in facing Quigg again and he became a twoweight world champion by beating WBA featherweight king Leo Santa Cruz.

But after losing that belt in a rematch, Frampton is looking for another crack at a world title and believes Quigg could be the man ® to provide it. “If he’s a world champion, he’s got something I want and that’s a world title,” said the Northern Irishman.

“It’s strange how this game works.

“I’ve been saying any time Quigg’s name is brought up that I don’t want anything to do with him unless he wins a world title.

“So if he wins a world title then we can do a rematch.”

But Frampton fears Quigg may come up short against the big-hitting Mexican, who has stopped 19 of his 23 opponents.

He said: “Fair play to him, it’s a difficult fight.

“But out of the world champions at the minute Valdez is someone who Quigg can beat because you can hit him. Valdez is a ferocious puncher, he’s a very good fighter, but he leaves himself open sometimes and Quigg can punch so that’s his chance.

“There’s a slight chance he can do something. It wouldn’t surprise me if he won but it is going to be difficult. I’m expecting Valdez to win.”

Tough

It is more likely Frampton will face IBF champion Lee Selby or Leeds’ Josh Warrington, who meet on May 19 at Elland Road.

Next up, Frampton has a tough assignment against former fourweight world champion Nonito Donaire in Belfast on April 21.

He added: “It’s all about my fight first. I need to win this one or nothing happens.”
