It’s a family tradition for new cop Rhiannon
A YOUNG police officer is walking a familiar beat – as her family’s fourth consecutive generation to join the force.
Rhiannon Griffiths has just finished an intensive training programme to sign up to her local constabulary.
And that makes her the fourth generation Pc Griffiths – following her father, grandfather and great-grandfather.
She said: “I remember when it was story time my dad would tell me about his job and what he did as a police officer and it all sounded so exciting. The older I got, the more interested I was in joining, and I just felt like I had to give it a go.”
The family tradition started in 1928 when great-grandad David Haydn Griffiths worked for Carmarthenshire Constabulary in Llanelli.
Rhiannon’s grandad Ray Griffiths was a Pc with the Glamorgan Constabulary, which later became South Wales Police, from 1951 to 1981.
And dad Marc Griffiths carried on the family tradition when he spent 30 years with South Wales Police before hanging up his uniform in 2008.
Rhiannon will now start on the beat with Dyfed Powys Police this month.
She said: “I’ve found the training quite difficult at times, but I have really enjoyed it.
“I have loved coming in to work every day.”
Dad Marc feels “incredibly proud” to see his daughter follow in the family footsteps.
He said: “Growing up, she said she wanted to join the police but I always thought she would grow out of it.
