THE coldest temperatur­e ever recorded during a UK winter was -27.2C, which was clocked in the village of Braemar in the Scottish Highlands. The same temperatur­e was recorded twice, on February 11, 1895 and on January 10, 1982. THE most amount of rain to fall in a five-minute period lashed Preston on August 10, 1893, with 32mm pouring over the Lancashire city in 300 seconds. THE British record for the most consecutiv­e days of rain was 89 and set on the Scottish island of Islay in 1923. But more recently, in 2016 the umbrella-wielding residents of Eglwyswrw, near Cardigan, had to endure 84 days before they finally had a full dry 24 hours. IN August 1976, Milton Abbas in Dorset and Teignmouth in Devon had record droughts – with no rain for 45 straight days. THE strongest tornado recorded in Britain was an F4 tornado, which battered Portsmouth on December 14 1810. It had a top speed of between 213mph and 240mph.
