FANS’ MUDBATH

- By LOUISE BERWICK

CHELTENHAM Festival is set to be a record breaker for all the wrong reasons as soggy March takes its toll on the four-day event.

The racetrack is expected to turn into a mudbath with forecasters predicting the heavens will open three days out of the four.

And the downpours are expected to put a dampener on the prestigious Gold Cup as the horses take to the course on the final day.

Martin Bowles of the Met Office said today is set to be the best day of the week.

He said: “We will expect some heavy rain to come through on Wednesday afternoon.

“On Thursday there could be some showers around so it does look like it could be quite wet.”

And from Friday punters should prepare to wrap up as temperatures will plunge back to winter figures, he warned.

Martin explained: “It starts to cool on Friday.

“Raincoats will be needed for the next three days and then warmer coats for the weekend.”

Bookies are now cutting odds on this month becoming the wettest on record.

Ladbrokes have slashed the chances on it being the wettest ever to just 7-4 from 2-1.
