Jack’s back

- By JEREMY CROSS

JACK WILSHERE has been thrown a World Cup lifeline.

England coach Gareth Southgate will name Arsenal star Wilshere

(right) in his squad today for the friendlies against Holland

and Italy this month. The Arsenal ace, 26, has not played for England since their Euro 2016 defeat to Iceland. He spent the majority of last season on loan at Bournemouth before suffering a broken leg in April which ended his campaign.

He appears to have shaken off his long history of injury woes and has made 30 appearances for the Gunners this season.

But Southgate

(right) has decided to bring him back into the fold and give him a chance to win a place in the squad for Russia.

The England boss is worried about his lack of midfield options and Wilshere, who has won 34 caps, has experience that could prove vital.

There could be first-time call-ups for Burnley trio Nick Pope, Ben Mee and James Tarkowski.

Southgate is keen to reward their progress, with the Clarets having such an impressive season. Asked if Wilshere had done enough to regain his England place, Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger said: “Yes, and I wish he is in the England squad. “The vibes I get are positive. I believe he has a good chance to be in there, but we have to leave that to Gareth. I have enough to do with my job.” Southgate is also considering 34-yearold Brighton striker Glenn Murray, who has scored six goals in his last seven games. He could provide cover for injured Tottenham ace Harry Kane, who damaged ankle ligaments in Sunday’s win at Bournemouth and will be sidelined until next month. Kane last night wrote on social media: “Disappointing to be out until next month, but injuries are part of the game. Will do everything I can to get back out there ASAP.”
