GLITTERS TURN TO SPARKLE

- By PATRICK WEAVER

PUNTERS love a horse in a handicap that could be Group class.

If there is one in Saturday’s 32Red Lincoln at Doncaster, it is almost certainly Lord Glitters.

The grey went for £250,000 at the sales last July having won both his starts in Paris in the spring.

His owners, Geoff and Sandra Turnbull, splashed the cash in the hope Lord Glitters would be as good as a previous purchase in 2014, Mondialiste.

The couple placed that one with David O’Meara and he went on to win the Arlington Million and Woodbine Mile.

Bought for £160,000 he earned over £1million for the couple.

Mondialiste was beaten a neck in the 2015 Lincoln – his first race for the Turnbulls. Lord Glitters, in contrast, has already had three races for them, and won the £155,000-to-the-winner ® Balmoral Handicap on Ascot’s Champions Day card.

That race is also on a straight mile, so it is no wonder that 32Red make him favourite.

Danny Tudhope, O’Meara’s stable jockey, will take the ride.

Betting

Next in the betting are the Newmarket pair, Addeybb and Fire Brigade.

William Haggas would have liked Ryan Moore for Addeybb but he will be on Michael Bell’s Fire Brigade, owned in partnership by Ed Ware, chief executive of the sponsor and one of its founders.

“It’s no secret that both are fancied,” said Ware yesterday. “They were first and third when joint-favourites for the Silver Cambridgeshire last September.

“Fire Brigade is much better getting his toe in, so maybe we can come off best this time. Ryan ringing up from Japan two weeks ago for the ride has given us confidence. You are always flattered when that happens.

“We are rated 98 now and it is not that long ago (before he was gelded) that he was 56.

“I gather some trainers have been held up but Fire Brigade has been up the Al Bahathri gallop twice and everything has gone according to plan.”

Haggas has taken Addeybb to Chelmsford City to get him fully fit and reportedly could not be happier with him.

The field for the first big race of the turf Flat season is limited to 22 runners. Those who do not make the cut are able to run in the 32Red.com Spring Mile.

32Red bet: 7 Lord Glitters, 8 Addeybb, 9 Fire Brigade, 12 Big Country, 14 Zabeel Prince, 16 Mitchum Swagger, 20 others. ¬CHAMPION Stakes winner Cracksman will begin his 2018 campaign in the Prix Ganay on April 29 at Longchamp.
