Suspect dies in car as cops close
A SERIAL bomber blew himself up yesterday as police moved in.
Mark Conditt, 24, detonated a device in his car before a SWAT team could get to him.
The computer nerd is believed to be responsible for at least five bombs that killed two people and wounded five in a 19-day wave of terror in Texas.
He targeted nonwhite people with parcel bombs in Austin.
The devices killed Anthony Stephan House, 39, and 17-year-old Draylen Mason and injured five others.
One bomb exploded prematurely at a FedEx delivery depot near San Antonio on Tuesday but fortunately only one person was slightly hurt.
Police fear Conditt, a computer repair technician, could have posted more bombs to unsuspecting locals, with one more being intercepted.
CCTV footage showed Conditt delivering two packages on Monday night to a FedEx office in south Austin.
He appeared to be wearing a disguise along with a pair of latex gloves. After tip-offs, police surrounded a hotel in Round Rock, a few miles north of Austin, early yesterday.
Conditt drove away but was closely followed by a SWAT team.
He then stopped at the roadside and blew himself up as officers approached.
One SWAT member was blown off his feet but escaped unhurt.
US President Donald Trump tweeted: “Austin bombing suspect is dead. Great job by law enforcement and all concerned.”
But Austin Police chief Brian Manley said: “We still need to remain vigilant to ensure that no other packages and devices have been left to the community.”
Conditt lived near his parents in Pflugerville near Austin.
Neighbours described him as a nerdy young man who came from a “tightknit, godly family”.
Donna Harper said: “He was always kind of quiet. He was a nerd, always reading, devouring books and computers.”
