A FAMILY is celebrating the birth of their first baby boy in five generations.

The Berriman brood have been an all-female affair for the last 86 years.

Then they found out Demi Berriman was expecting a lad – but little Arnie Ellis had to battle a series of health problems before the whole family could celebrate.

The tot was born prematurely with a rare birth defect meaning his intestines formed outside his body.

He was struck down with sepsis and a string of complications but after fighting for his life he is now healthy.

Arnie’s gran Donna Berriman, 43, greatgrandma Janice Berriman, 65, and family matriarch great-great-grandma Beryl Vaus, 86, were ecstatic over the arrival of 20,000-1 baby Arnie. Gran Donna said: “We absolutely loved it when he was born.

“We were so excited – I honestly thought Demi was going to have a girl but I was wrong.”

First-time mum Demi said that her poorly son’s first months had been deeply traumatic.

Critical

She said: “It was horrible, we were with him the whole time. It really was touch and go at one stage – it was critical and we did not know what was going to happen.”

He was on morphine to stop him moving and causing himself pain.

Debbie added: “It was amazing when they took him off the life support machine and he started breathing for himself. We couldn’t wait to see his big blue eyes open again.”
