Timely look at why we do BST

-

BRITS needs to remember to put their clocks forward at 1am tomorrow.

We will gain an extra hour of daylight as we officially enter British Summer Time (BST).

The Daily Star has put together a list of facts and figures as longer days take hold. 1 Builder William Willett first suggested the idea in 1907 because he was annoyed that his rounds of golf were cut short by the darkness. 2 The government initially blocked his idea and Mr Willett died in 1915 before his plan was put into practice. 3 He is the greatgreat-grandfather of Coldplay singer Chris Martin. 4 The outbreak of World War One made the issue more crucial because of the country’s need to save coal by adding an hour of natural light. 5 The Summer Time Act was first established in 1916. 6 BST always starts at 1am on the last Sunday in March and ends at 2am on the last Sunday in October. 7 Iceland, Belarus and Russia are the only European countries to opt out of the system. 8 About 70 countries adopt some sort of daylight savings. 9 A Cambridge University report said the economy would be boosted by £485million by sticking to BST all-year around. 10 It is estimated that consumers could save £260m annually on energy bills. 11 All 2,000 clocks in the Houses of Parliament are changed at the same time. 12 MPs tried to restart the debate on “double” British Summer Time but a bill was defeated.
