MO SALAH is no Lionel Messi but he is my Player of the Year – and I don’t think what he’s doing at Liverpool is a one-off. Normally I would go for the best player in the best team – and that would be Kevin De Bruyne at Manchester City. But I just think De Bruyne has dropped off a bit recently and what Salah is doing is phenomenal. He’s going to win the Golden Boot playing on the wing. How many players ever do that? I think Salah is the best runner off the ball in the world. When he goes, he GOES. He bursts away from people. And to score 28 league goals already this season, playing where he does, is absolutely sensational. A lot of them he’s made on his own as well.

But comparing him to Messi is going miles too far. Messi beat Chelsea on his own in the Champions League. Salah needs to come back when he’s scored 500-odd goals before being mentioned in the same breath. I think there’s more to come from him, though. People might think it’s a one-off, but I think he’ll carry on scoring goals. The only trouble is, if Gareth Bale leaves Real Madrid this summer, then Salah is the perfect replacement. They’re both quick, they both score goals from all over, and I think Madrid might come in for him. De Bruyne is definitely Salah’s biggest challenger for Player of the Year but he plays in a team which scores goals for fun and he’s only scored seven. I know he has a lot of assists too, but I don’t think he’s as influential for City right now as he was earlier on in the season. David Silva has kind of taken over that role.
