Tammy’s Russian dreams

- By DAVE ARMITAGE

® TAMMY ABRAHAM refuses to give up on his England World Cup hopes.

The on-loan Swansea striker made his England debut against Germany in November and admits he got the taste for it.

A back injury and the goals drying up at Swansea have halted his progress.

And Abraham is back with England Under-21s for today’s friendly with Romania at Molineux.

The 20-year-old still harbours hopes of heading to Russia and said: “Gareth spoke to the group when we arrived this week and gave us our England caps.

Care

“He said the opportunity was there for us. He’s not shy to bring young players through.

“I have been at places where the first-team manager doesn’t really care about the young players or the academy.

“I have to keep improving and do my best.”

Southgate’s faith in him for last year’s friendly games against the world champions and Brazil at Wembley has given Abraham a focus on where he wants to go.

The Chelsea starlet added: “If I got into the World Cup squad, then I would be knocking on the door at Chelsea.

“I have been there since I was six. My dream is to break into the first team.” ENGLAND Women have moved up to second in the FIFA world rankings – their best-ever position. It’s also the highest position achieved by an England team.
