Hackers hit sports stars dope tests
UK AGENCY ATTACKED
TOP sports stars feared last night their medical records had been hacked.
The UK Anti-Doping agency revealed it had suffered a cyber attack.
The body holds thousands of drug test details and medical information on famous names from more than 40 sports, including Premier League footballers and Olympic athletes.
Staff at the agency’s London HQ were called into a meeting yesterday where they were told of the breach and sent home.
Previous hacks on anti-doping organisations have revealed detailed medical data about some of the world’s top sports stars.
A Ukad spokesman confirmed it was the victim of a cyber attack and it was investigating. A source said the staff were told: “There are no electronic systems live at the moment. “We’re running through our internal processes to try and remedy the situation – to identify the source of the attack and deal with it.” In 2016, anonymous cyber espionage group Fancy Bears leaked the World Anti-Doping Agency’s classified medical records and drug testing files of several athletes who had received therapeutic use exemptions, including tennis ace Serena Williams, cyclist Sir Bradley Wiggins and runner Sir Mo Farah. The group also later infiltrated the International Association of Athletics Federations and International Olympic Committee servers.
