WHAT’S HOT TO WATCH TODAY

- MIKE WARD

IF it’s a gritty domestic drama you’re after, you can always rely on writer Danny Brocklehurst, the bloke behind Ordinary Lies, to come up with the goods. Same as you can always rely on Christopher Eccleston to give a compelling performance, as he did recently in The A Word. So BBC1’S new three-parter

COME HOME (9pm), set in Belfast, is a win-win in that respect. Eccleston plays Greg, a motor mechanic who’s now effectively a single dad to his three kids, with Paula Malcomson as his estranged wife Marie, who walked out on the family nearly a year ago. Exactly why this marriage fell apart isn’t yet clear, but each episode will show us events from a different perspective.

Tonight’s is mostly about Greg desperately looking for love elsewhere and potentially finding it in Brenna, the mildly mad local sandwich lady currently married to a Neanderthal.

THIS COUNTRY (10.45pm, BBC1) just gets funnier and funnier. I actually scribbled down some of tonight’s best lines, then realised they’re pretty much unprintable. The vicar’s son Jacob shows up in this one (“You have a son? Jacob? I thought that was your dog…” – that’s one of the printable ones), while Kerry grudgingly agrees to visit a pensioner in need of company. LEE Mack is set to show off his baking skills tonight. The only snag being he doesn’t have any. Still, that’s no big deal on THE GREAT CELEBRITY BAKE OFF FOR STAND UP

TO CANCER (8pm, Channel 4) where he steps into the tent this week with Melanie Sykes, Joe Lycett and Griff Rhys Jones. Mike’s exclusive online column is at www. dailystar.co.uk/columnists. Follow him on Twitter @mikewardontv and at www.telly.click
