A 28-YEAR-old woman was fighting for her life last night after being crushed by a pallet of bricks believed to have fallen from a crane.
Emergency services rushed to the victim who was struck next to a development of luxury flats.
Pictures taken by eyewitnesses show her lying on the pavement surrounded by helpers as well as bricks and broken planks of wood.
Bystanders began giving first aid to the victim, who has not been named, before she was taken to hospital with serious injuries.
Doctors last night described her condition as “critical” and police said her family had been informed. Witness Aladdin Rahman said: “My friend who was driving a bus at the time it happened, said some bricks had fallen on the woman.
“Several people were trying to get to the lady and so were the construction workers. It was a hectic scene.”
The development – Bow Corner, in Mile End, east London – is for 19 one, two and three-bedroom apartments under construction.
Steve Boreham, construction director of Higgins Homes who are building the apartments, said in a statement: “Our primary concerns are with the lady who has been injured and those affected.
“We are working with the Health & Safety Executive who are investigating the incident to determine the cause and will release more information as soon as it’s available.”
