Mac: I’ve not been pushed

- by DAVE LYONS

IPSWICH boss Mick McCarthy insists he hasn’t been forced out by abusive fans.

The 59-year-old, who took charge in November 2012, will leave at the end of the season when his contract expires. The Tractor Boys had a two-year option on his services that owner Marcus Evans has decided not to trigger.

McCarthy’s relationship with the Ipswich fans has hit rock-bottom in recent months.

Thousands deserted the club last year and with season tickets due for renewal many more were planning to join the exodus.

McCarthy was the main target for fans’ frustration and he admitted: “My wife was even asking me weeks ago why I didn’t pack it in.

“But it’s not the abuse that has forced me out. Both Marcus and I just think it is the right time for us both to have a fresh start.

“My shift here is done. It is time for someone else to have a go, but I am proud of what I achieved here.

“We had seven points from 13 games when I took over and we’re in a far healthier state now. But we’re not progressing, we’re pretty much standing still.”

The news comes with Ipswich having failed to even score in their last five home games, a new club record.

Assistant Terry Connor, who also worked with McCarthy at previous club Wolves, is also leaving.
