Painter bids to put GB in world frame

- by PETER OAKES

ROB PAINTER is aiming for a golden future with Great Britain.

Painter (below) and his partner Vicky Bramwell have agreed an exclusive contract to be in sole charge of the national side.

They are launching a brand new company – Great Britain Speedway Team – to run all aspects of the Lions in a long-term deal.

Painter has already set his sights on turning GB into the best team in the world – starting at this summer’s Speedway of Nations, the competition brought in to replace the annual World Cup.

He said: “Everyone wants to win and we are no different.

“I obviously know and respect how difficult that will be but I don’t see any reason why we can’t. I believe we can do it. Our top three are a match for anyone in the world.”

Painter, 39, admits he wasn’t much cop as a rider, but turned into one of the country’s top mechanics, working for Jason Crump when he won the first of his three world titles in 2004.

Four years ago he set up his own international race team and added: “I have made my primary living as a professional in speedway for 20 years and I have never seen us crowned world champions.

“The last time was in 1989 when I was a fan at Milton Keynes and only 11!” POOLE have tied up a deal to sign Danish star Peter Kildemand, 28, on a short-term deal. He replaces 2012 world champion Chris Holder, who has been ruled out due to personal issues.
