SECURITY will be ramped up for the London Marathon after a terror alert at a race in Germany.

Four men were arrested at the Berlin Half-Marathon yesterday.

Police believe one of the suspects was aiming to stab competitors and spectators.

Officers say the planned assault had links to an attack on the city’s Christmas market in 2016 in which 11 people died and dozens more were hurt.

It is claimed yesterday’s suspect was found with two knifes on him.

All four men have been linked to ® Tunisian Islamic extremist Anis Amri who ploughed a truck into Berlin’s Christmas market after being denied asylum.

Two Brits were among those injured in the incident.

Security for this year’s London Marathon is now set to be the tightest in its history.

Scores of undercover officers are expected to be deployed at the run in just under two weeks.

Last year more than 40,000 professional and amateur runners took to the streets of the capital and that figure is expected to be topped this year.

In 2013 three people were killed at the Boston Marathon when brothers Dzhokhar and Tamerlan Tsarnaev detonated bombs near the finish line.

Supt Nick Aldworth, of the Met Police, said: “We are mobilising the community.

“Record numbers of people have been contacting the police to report suspicious activity.

“By being vigilant, we can all create a hostile environment for potential terrorists who may be considering their targets.”
