ARMED Forces officers have been ordered to boost equality in their units if they want to be promoted.

The move by new head of the military General Sir Nick Carter is thought to be an effort to recruit more women, LGBT and ethnic minority troops.

Sir Nick, who becomes chief of the defence staff in June, has promised a new era of political correctness.

A leaked document says those who fail to help troops of different genders, sexual orientations or faiths work together will not be put forward for career progress.

Commanding officers will have to list all the diversity initiatives taken in their annual reports.

Serving officers slammed the plans as patronising.

One said: “The scheme is damn well patronising for those who have fought together on the front line and been to hell and back.

“We don’t give a stuff whether someone is gay or straight, black or white, Muslim, Christian or atheist, as long as they can do the job.

“The Army, Navy and ® RAF are not in the Dark Ages.”

A spokesman for the Ministry of Defence said: “We are committed to promoting a modern, diverse and inclusive workplace.”

Defence Secretary Gavin Williamson was forced to step in when Sir Nick suggested dropping its “Be The Best” motto.

The MoD said in December: “The Defence Secretary has put these proposals on hold.”
