SYRIA MISSILE CRISIS POINT

‘New Cold War’ fears

- By ALEXANDER BROWN alex.brown@dailystar.co.uk

THE new Cold War between Russia and the West deepened last night as Israel unleashed airstrikes against Moscow’s Syrian allies.

Tensions in the Middle East are boiling over after the gassing of innocent Syrian families in rebelheld regions by the Assad regime.

The Israeli airstrikes killed 14 people, believed to be Iranians who were supporting Assad’s troops.

Russia and Syria have pointed the finger at Israel for the attacks and a spokesman for the Israeli military declined to comment.

However, Yitzchak Yosef, the Sephardi chief rabbi of Israel, claimed Israel was forced to act by the atrocity.

He said: “I have said in the past and I will say it again, what is happening in ® Syria is genocide of women and children in its cruelest form, using weapons of mass destruction.

“We have a moral obligation not to keep quiet and to try and stop this massacre.”

Israel has what is described as the “most technologically advanced military on Earth”, spending £4.6billion a year on arms.

But Syria’s military is said to have been bolstered by support from Vladimir Putin’s Russia, as well as fighters from Iran, Iraq and Lebanon.

Meanwhile, the United Nations Security Council has called an emergency meeting after Donald Trump’s warned there would be a “big price to pay”.

The US president lashed out on Twitter after at least 40 people died in the rebel-held town of Douma in an acid attack. Mr Trump branded Assad an “animal” in a series of posts.

He said: “Many dead, including women and children, in mindless CHEMICAL attack in Syria.

“President Putin, Russia and Iran are responsible for backing Animal Assad. Big price... to pay.”

A similar attack a year ago in the northern Syrian town of Khan Sheikhoun left dozens of people dead, prompting the US to fire Tomahawk cruise missiles at a Syrian air base at the time.

There are now fears the conflict will continue to grow into all-out global warfare.

The European Union also blasted the attack, saying: “The evidence points towards yet another chemical attack by the

FOR seven years we have watched the Syrian war rage from the sidelines. Many have died and many more have been injured.

Assad’s forces have abused international law by using chemical warfare on innocent citizens. Enough is now enough. We can no longer stand by and do nothing.

The world must unite as one against the leader and his forces.

The world’s governments must ensure that he knows this kind of war crime will not go unpunished and it is time to act.

Otherwise he’ll continue to stick two fingers up to the world.

And thousands more will perish in agony.

Sanctions, diplomacy and – if all else fails – military might must be considered.

Only then will the warmongers finally know they cannot get away with murder.
