ADAM CAN’T RE-PEAT

No second gold for ace

- from IAIN STEWART

ADAM PEATY became the latest English big name to flop when he was beaten in the 50m breaststroke.

After winning his favoured 100m breaststroke title on Saturday, Peaty failed to repeat the feat and had to settle for silver.

South Africa’s Cameron van der Burgh won gold to leave Peaty with a sinking feeling.

With the Brownlee brothers in the triathlon and gymnastic star Max Whitlock also failing to live up to the hype, Peaty said: “It gives me a reality check.

“Even if you’re the best in the world, and the world record holder, you can still be beaten. I think that’s the most valuable lesson from this. I’ve been off my best all week. Mentally I was there, but my body wasn’t.”

Elsewhere in the pool, James Guy took silver in the 100m fly.

But there was joy for Wales’ Alys Thomas, who picked up her first major international medal at the age of 27 with victory in the 200m butterfly.

In Coomera, England continued to dominate in the gymnastics and finished top of the medal table with 16, including six golds.

Pressure

Nile Wilson scooped his third gold and fifth medal of the Games in the horizontal bar.

He said: “It’s a massive stepping stone. We might not have been amongst the best gymnasts in the world, but to soak up the environment and learn how to handle the pressure is a huge thing.”

James Willstrop’s long wait for Commonwealth Games squash gold is over after he beat New Zealand’s Paul Coll 3-0 in the men’s singles final.

Willstrop, 34, twice had to settle for silver behind fellow countryman Nick Matthew in Delhi and Glasgow.

But the former world No.1 beat Coll in straight sets 11-9 11-4 11-6.
