We’re twin it to win
from IAIN STEWART ENGLAND’S boxing twins Pat and Luke McCormack both guaranteed themselves medals yesterday.
Luke silenced the home crowd to win a thrilling light-welterweight quarter-final with Australian Liam Wilson.
Pat (inset) followed suit when he defeated welterweight Musa Bwogi, of Uganda.
The 22-year-olds from Tyne and Wear fight again in their semi-finals on Friday.
Pat said: “I’ve got plenty more to give.
“I watched Luke on the television and I loved his showboating.
“I think he gave the crowd something to enjoy even though he beat the Aussie.”
Luke said: “It’s a bronze medal but I’m not even bothered about bronze, I want the gold – nothing less.”
Preston flyweight Lisa Whiteside, 33, will box for a medal this morning against India’s Pinki Rani, with a spot in the semi-finals up for grabs.
But two years ago she was lying in a hospital bed wondering if she would ever fight again.
Whiteside said: “I fractured my skull when I fell backwards off a wall, and I also tore my ear canal which messed my balance up.
“I’m very lucky that I didn’t suffer anything more serious.
“I’m still a bit deaf in my left ear, I had problems with my balance for a long time.
“Doctors were unsure if I could box again but I proved them all wrong.”
