-

( ONE billion KitKat products are eaten in the UK every year. Worldwide, 564 fingers get gobbled up every second. ) The name KitKat comes from a type of mutton pie sold in the 18th century by a man called Kit Catling. * Originally sold as a boxed assortment of chocs, the treats we know today were launched by Rowntree’s in 1935. + They were designed to be a bar that a “man could take to work in his packed lunch”. , However, the chocolate covered wafers were originally known as Rowntree’s Chocolate Crisp and sold for tuppence. They were renamed KitKat in 1937. - During World War Two, the recipe had to be temporarily altered due to milk shortages. The packaging was changed to blue from 1945 until 1947. . KitKats, which contain two or four fingers that can be snapped off individually, soon became popular all over the world. / The slogan “Have a Break, Have a KitKat!” dates back to 1957. Before then they were marketed as “the biggest little meal” and “the best companion to a cup of tea”. 0 In June 1988, Swiss company Nestlé took over production of KitKat. They now make 17.6bn fingers every year. Hershey has a licence to make the bars in the US. (' KitKats are still made in York in the UK as well as in 14 other countries. They are sold in more than 70 territories including Brazil and Algeria. (( There are already many different types of KitKat on offer here including white and dark chocolate, mint, cookies & cream, and toffee, as well as KitKat ice cream. (* Other celebs who have advertised KitKats include model Kelly Brook, 38, and former footballer Roy Keane, 46. (+ A 1989 ad where a photographer “takes a break” and misses some rollerskating pandas came 30th in Channel 4’s TV’s 100 Greatest Adverts poll. (, In 2006, Susie Verrico entered TV’s Big Brother after finding one of 100 golden tickets hidden in KitKat wrappers.
