I’M NOT FAZED BY FLOPS

Dina can do it for England

- from IAIN STEWART on the Gold Coast

DINA ASHER-SMITH says she is not under pressure to make up for England’s high-profile Commonwealth Games flops.

The 22-year-old will go for gold after easing her way into today’s 200m final.

The focus is on Asher-Smith (inset) after sprinter Asha Philip, hurdler Andy Pozzi and the triathlete Brownlee brothers missed out on medals.

Gymnast Max Whitlock failed to win the pommel horse and Adam Peaty lost his four-year unbeaten run in the pool adding to the list of English disappointments.

But Asher-Smith, who ran 22.44 seconds to finish second in yesterday’s semi-final, insists she is unaffected by those failures.

She said: “I don’t pay attention to what’s happening outside the bubble.

“I don’t know what’s been said. We all want each other to do well because we’re a team, there’s no individual pressure. You want to go and win the semi-final but I’m happy to have put down that time. “You can ease off because you can get into a tear-up if you want to, but something in the back of my mind reminded me it was the semi-final. “You’d love to win a semi but I’ve qualified in a decent time and I didn’t feel too bad doing it.” Team-mate Bianca Williams is also in the final but there was no place for Finette Agyapong. Zharnel Hughes reached the men’s 200m final, winning his semi in 20.37s, but Richard Kilty missed out. England’s netball team beat New Zealand for the first time at the Games to set up a Saturday semi-final with Jamaica. Tracey Neville’s side won 54-45 and goal keeper Geva Mentor said: “That’s a history making game. We mean business this tournament.”
