going to do it our way’. We did that much better in the second half. And that is credit to him and the rest of the coaching staff.”

Mo Salah and Roberto Firmino fired in second-half goals to give Liverpool a 2-1 victory and clinch their place in the semi-final draw, which takes place tomorrow, for the first time in 10 years.

While City boss Pep Guardiola was losing the plot with the referee at the break, earning himself a seat in the stand for the second half, Klopp’s men were already getting stuck into each other.

“To be honest I was shouting a bit at half-time,” said Lovren.

“I told the lads to wake up because it was not good enough and I said we were sitting too deep.

“It was all positive. There was nothing negative but I needed to remind the guys we had 50 minutes to be in the semi-finals of the Champions League and we needed to give more.”

For Klopp it was his eighth win over Guardiola – no other manager has a better record against him than the German.

Liverpool scored from five of their 14 attempts across the two legs while City only converted once from 31 efforts on goal to leave themselves on the end of more European heartbreak.

Respect

“When you concede one goal and score five against Manchester City, I think we should respect Liverpool more,” said Lovren.

“People talked from the beginning about Man City being favourites and they were favourites but I think after this there should be more respect for Liverpool.”

The dream of adding a sixth European Cup to the Anfield trophy cabinet is now tantalisingly close to becoming a reality.

“It is everything you dream of when you are a young lad,” added England star Oxlade-Chamberlain, who joined the Anfield outfit from Arsenal last summer for £35m.

“You want to play in finals and they don’t come much bigger than the Champions League final, so my dream is one step closer after getting into the semi-finals.

“This is a massive confidence boost for us. To beat City twice is no easy feat. We did it twice in a week and we also did it at an earlier stage this season.

“It just shows us that when we are at the races and at the right level we can beat anyone in this league.

“Now it is on us to go and prove that we can beat people in Europe as well.

“It doesn’t matter who we get now, we have to make sure we are ready for anyone and we can beat anyone.”
