HUGHES LOSES ARMS RACE

-

ENGLAND’S Zharnel Hughes missed out on gold in the 200m after being controversially disqualified.

Hughes was on course for victory after leading for most of the race.

But after stumbling in the closing stages, his left arm made contact with Trinidad & Tobago’s Jereem Richards.

The 22-year-old won the race on a photo-finish in a time of 20.12 seconds.

But after completing a lap of honour, Hughes was told he had been disqualified for hitting Richards in the last few metres.

England appealed the disqualification but it was dismissed.

And that meant Richards was awarded gold with Canada’s Aaron Brown second, while Northern ® from IAIN STEWART Ireland’s Leon Reid was promoted to a bronze medal spot.

Richards said: “Coming down the home straight, he was ahead, and when I started to catch him, his hand came across and he hit me.

“I think I was strong enough down the straight, I was closing on him really fast, but when I got hit that knocked me back a bit.”

England sprinter Dina Asher-Smith won bronze in the women’s 200m, coming in behind the Bahamas’ Shaunae Miller-Uibo, who held off Jamaica’s Shericka Jackson to take the gold in 22.09 seconds. ¬ÊJack Laugher claimed his second diving gold to set up his bid for a Games hat-trick today. The Englishman followed up his victory in the one-metre springboard with the three-metre title. Laugher finished with a score of 519.40 points – 66.70 clear of his nearest challenger. I’m really proud of my score.” Laugher will go for his third gold in the synchronised three-metre springboard final partnered by Chris Mears. ¬ England’s Katarina Johnson-Thompson leads in the heptathlon overnight after victory in her 200m heat gave her a 126-point lead after the first day of competition.
