HUGHES LOSES ARMS RACE
ENGLAND’S Zharnel Hughes missed out on gold in the 200m after being controversially disqualified.
Hughes was on course for victory after leading for most of the race.
But after stumbling in the closing stages, his left arm made contact with Trinidad & Tobago’s Jereem Richards.
The 22-year-old won the race on a photo-finish in a time of 20.12 seconds.
But after completing a lap of honour, Hughes was told he had been disqualified for hitting Richards in the last few metres.
England appealed the disqualification but it was dismissed.
And that meant Richards was awarded gold with Canada’s Aaron Brown second, while Northern ® from IAIN STEWART Ireland’s Leon Reid was promoted to a bronze medal spot.
Richards said: “Coming down the home straight, he was ahead, and when I started to catch him, his hand came across and he hit me.
“I think I was strong enough down the straight, I was closing on him really fast, but when I got hit that knocked me back a bit.”
