® A HAPLESS burglar was caught – after using a getaway car with a personalised number plate.

Neighbours took photos of George Mee’s car after an attempted raid at a student’s house.

And police had no trouble matching the VW motor’s GM05 MEE registration to the jobless kitchen fitter.

Now a judge has told the 20-year-old he should go on a course in “bettering his thinking skills”. After hearing Mee’s parents had allowed him back behind the wheel, recorder Dexter Dias QC asked: “I trust that the number plate has now been changed?”

Mee’s lawyer Caroline Moonan confirmed it had.

At Canterbury Crown Court Mee admitted burglary. He was given an 18-month community order and 100 hours’ community service. Prosecutor David Povall said Mee’s victim Daniel Robinson had opened his door in Deal, Kent, to find the burglar and another man holding a knife. The student screamed for help as he scuffled with the knifeman, who then ran away, the court heard

Mee was “scuffed up” by shocked locals but was allowed to escape after being photographed.

He was later arrested at his home in Folkestone.

Mee told police he had driven an old school pal to the address to collect an outstanding debt.

One Twitter user joked: “There’s dumb, there’s dumber and then there’s George Mee.”
