RUDD FEARS AXE OVER WINDRUSH

Calls to scrap migrant targets

- by ALEXANDER BROWN alex.brown@dailystar.co.uk

AMBER Rudd was fighting for her job last night over her handling of the Windrush scandal.

The Home Secretary was also facing calls for the Government to ditch its immigration target.

Home Office blunders led to scores of Caribbean nationals, who came to Britain legally decades ago, losing their jobs and homes.

Giving evidence to MPs yesterday, Ms Rudd denied the Tories’ immigration policy had fuelled the saga.

She said: “It’s wrong to think the 100,000 net migration target is the problem here.”

Challenged on whether she would remove the target, Ms Rudd said: “I have not discussed that with the Prime Minister.”

She is now facing calls to resign from Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn as well numerous other MPs.

One of those affected by the scandal is Jessica Eugene, a grandmother of Stratford, east London, who has paid taxes in this country for almost 40 years.

Despite this, she was fired from her charity job last month because she could not prove her right to remain here.

The 58-year-old, who has not left Britain since 1970, said she was “gutted”. She said: “I’ve always worked and want to continue doing so.”

A Home Office spokesman said: “The Home Secretary has apologised unreservedly for any distress caused.”
