ONE of Corrie’s most loved characters will kill himself in shocking scenes.

Troubled Aidan Connor is found dead in harrowing episodes to be aired next week.

Viewers were only aware that actor Shayne Ward, who plays Street hunk Aidan, was leaving the show later this month.

It is the last departing jawdropper from soap boss Kate Oates, who has been rapped by fans for her grim storylines.

Kate also announced last month she is leaving the soap.

She last night admitted to being nervous about the suicide storyline, but was determined to do the issue justice.

She said: “I have had fears about it but having worked on helplines myself for two years this was an important issue I needed to highlight.”

The story will be screened next Monday and Wednesday and sees an emotional final day for Aidan. He treats his family and friends to lavish gifts and even tells ex-fiancée Eva Price (Cath Tyldesley) he loves her.

Agony

His final moments see Aidan, to the backdrop of his favourite song, Cosmic Love by Florence & The Machine, in tears at the pub before going home and sobbing on his sofa. The next day dad Johnny (Richard Hawley) finds his son’s body at his flat.

He finds a note on the sofa saying: “Don’t go in the bathroom – call the police,” which his dad ignores before screaming in agony when he finds his son.

Shayne adds: “Aidan is an ‘everyman’ figure and someone men can identify with. Talking about this could have helped him turn his life around.”

In scenes running alongside the suicide story in next week’s show, David Platt, played by Jack P Shepherd, decides to open up about his own troubles.

Kate added: “I wanted David to have the last word and show that when you decide to open up – there will always be someone there to listen.

“Suicide is the biggest killer of men under 45 in this country.

“With 84 men taking their lives each week, we simply can’t afford not to talk about it.”

Coronation Street worked closely with the Samaritans and CALM on the episodes.
