RUDDY GOOD LUCK, MATE...
Windrush vow as Javid takes over
THE new Home Secretary last night vowed to fight for the Windrush generation – saying they reminded him of his own immigrant family.
Sajid Javid said the scandal over threats to deport African and Caribbean migrants who have lived here for decades could have easily affected “my mum, my brother, my uncle or even me”.
He was promoted from Communities Secretary to replace Amber Rudd after she resigned for “inadvertently misleading” MPs about targets for removing illegal immigrants. Speaking in Parliament, Mr Javid said: “I want to start by making a pledge, a pledge to those from the Windrush generation who have been in this country for decades and yet have struggled to navigate through the immigration system. “This never should have been the case and I will do whatever it takes to put it right.”
Inspired
The son of a Pakistani-born bus driver, he said he was inspired to help because of his own background. He added: “Learning about the difficulties Windrush migrants have faced has resonated with me personally, particularly because I myself am a second-generation migrant.
“Like the Caribbean Windrush generation, my parents came to this country from the Commonwealth in the 1960s.
“That’s why I am so personally committed to, and invested in, resolving the difficulties faced by the people of the Windrush generation who have built their lives here and contributed so much.”
A former Northern Ireland HOPE: PM ‘will recall her’ secretary, James Brokenshire, replaces Mr Javid as Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government.
Last night, senior Conservatives tipped Ms Rudd to go straight back into Cabinet once the Windrush scandal dies down.
One said: “Amber Rudd is a talent the Government cannot afford to lose. Rather than be rudderless for long, she’ll be brought back in when the storm blows over.”
It came as leaked emails revealed Ms Rudd was told “there were no targets” for removing immigrants before her comments to MPs last week.
