YOU SORRY LOT!
Brits obsessed with apologising
APOLOGETIC Brits say sorry up to seven times a day for no reason.
A total of 58% said they were most likely to apologise for not hearing someone.
The second biggest reason given was walking into someone accidentally (55%) followed by trying to attract somebody’s attention (28%).
And 5% said they even apologise for things that are completely out of their control, such as the weather. The survey for Diet Coke shows why the comedy Sorry! – starring the late Ronnie Corbett – was such a hit in the Eighties.
Corbett played wimpy Timothy Lumsden, a 41-year-old still living with his domineering mum Phyllis and henpecked father Sidney.
The research revealed that an average British person says sorry about 200,000 times in a lifetime – the equivalent of 56 hours spent apologising.
But the obsession diminishes with age, with over-55s saying sorry half the number of times of those in the 16-24 age group.
As well as apologising unnecessarily, 70% of adults admit to not living their life in certain ways due to worries over what others might think.
For instance, some 26% of us do not wear the clothes we like most because of this.
Aedamar Howlett, marketing chief for Coca-Cola GB and Ireland, said: “As a nation, it seems we are addicted to saying sorry, sometimes for no reason at all.”
