Time to stop rot, Tom tells Vikings

- By JULIE STOTT

TOM GILMORE fears struggling Widnes are already in make or break territory.

The Vikings face a huge game against bottom side Huddersfield on Friday and Gilmore admits it’s one they simply have to win.

He said: “The next three weeks are the biggest part of our season. It is make or break.

“The Huddersfield game is the biggest game of the season for us but they need to win just as much.”

Critical

Widnes lie ninth, above Hull KR and Catalans on points difference and one point better off than the Giants.

But crucially there is already a four-point gap to the safety of eighth spot and Gilmore says it’s critical the wins start coming soon.

He said: “Our defeat to Wigan was the story of our season. We play well in patches and then have spells that are horrible.

“I don’t know if it’s a mental frailty but we have got to be asking questions of ourselves.

“Something has got to flick in our heads and we have got to stop the rot. We need to sort something out.”

Widnes were well in control against second-placed Wigan but then leaked three tries in five minutes on their way to a

32-24 defeat.

Hometown star Gilmore,

24, added: “We get in a cycle we can’t get out of and it’s gutting. We cannot work that hard and not deserve to win.”

Coach Denis Betts has urged fans to stand by the team, in spite of the run of five defeats on the trot.

“We need supporters to keep coming. We need to hold our nerve – every game is a big game for us now,” he said.

The Giants haven’t won a game since early March but could benefit from the new coach factor this week.

Aussie Simon Woolford hopes to get visa clearance in time to arrive for Friday’s game after being appointed on Monday.
