Liverpool legend in on three-year deal

- By JEREMY CROSS

STEVEN GERRARD has agreed to become the next Rangers boss.

The Liverpool legend has accepted the club’s offer of a three-year deal and will start at Ibrox in June.

Starsport understands Gerrard decided to take the plunge after being promised “significant funds” to spend on new signings.

His former Liverpool team-mate Gary McAllister (inset) is expected to be Gerrard’s No.2 in Glasgow.

Gerrard, 37, has spent the last

12 months coaching the Reds’

Under-18 side after returning to the club following a spell in the MLS with LA Galaxy.

His long-term dream is to be Liverpool boss, but Jurgen Klopp is likely to block his path for the next few years.

Gerrard has told close friends he could not turn down the chance of a first managerial role at one of Britain’s biggest clubs.

His appointment will see Gerrard go head-to-head with his former boss Brendan Rodgers at Celtic.

Rangers announced yesterday that Graeme Murty had been sacked in the wake of Sunday’s 5-0 humiliation at Celtic that saw Rodgers’ men win a seventh straight league title. Murty, 43, was given the job until the end of the season in December after a spell in interim charge following Pedro Caixinha’s sacking.

Murty has been given the chance to return to his role in the club’s academy and is considering his options. Rangers’ next game is at home to Kilmarnock and the club said assistants Jimmy Nicholl and Jonatan Johansson will take charge for the three remaining matches of the season.

A club spokesman said: “The club hopes to be in a position to comment further on the managerial situation in the near future.

“Rangers are grateful to Graeme, who did not hesitate when asked last October to become interim manager after the departure of Pedro, and then, at the turn of the year, when he was offered the role as manager until the end of the season.”

Gerrard will spend the next few weeks assessing his squad from a distance before deciding on his transfer targets.
