Gildart’s on a hot streak
ON-FIRE Oliver Gildart kept up his impressive try-scoring run as Wigan swept to their sixth win in a row.
The centre grabbed a touchdown for the fifth successive match as depleted Salford conceded six tries.
Gildart raced 50 metres for a spectacular solo effort to start the rout.
The Warriors were far from their best but still had too much firepower for the Red Devils, whose only consolation was not conceding another 60 points after last week’s drubbing by St Helens.
Sam Tomkins notched 14 points for the Warriors with two tries and three goals, to enjoy bragging rights alongside brother Joel over youngest sibling Logan in the Salford ranks.
Wigan were missing skipper Sean O’Loughlin and Joe Burgess – ruled out for the rest of the season with a knee injury.
But patched-up Salford were without seven regulars including Robert Lui and Niall Evalds with debuts for Gavin Bennion and Levy Nzoungou.
Dogged defence kept the Warriors out until midway through the first half when Gildart cut inside before sprinting clear for his ninth try of the season.
Salford winger Jake Bibby then forgot the golden rule of never letting the ball bounce and Liam Marshall sent Tony Clubb crashing over.
George Williams scythed through more poor defence and three Sam Tomkins conversions made it 18-0 at the break.
Sam Tomkins burrowed under the Salford cover twice to stretch the lead to 26-0 before John Bateman went over.
