Hughes took over on March 14 with the Saints heading in one direction under former boss Mauricio Pellegrino after one win from 17 games.

But Tuesday’s nail-biting win all but secured Saints’ Premier League status for another season.

And midfielder Oriol Romeu says news that the manager is set to stay will be welcomed by the dressing room.

Romeu said: “He’s done what he had to do and he deserves credit.

“And the players hope he stays and we can work with him again.

“He has done his job in a difficult situation. He came in and the dressing room wasn’t in a good situation.

“It was difficult to cheer everyone up, but I think he did it.

“Mark’s got better results as the atmosphere was better. The feeling with the lads today is amazing.”
