TOM LEADING THE CHARGE

- By SEAN LEACH

TOM INGRAM heads the young guns’ title charge as the British Touring Car Championship resumes at Thruxton this weekend.

The Speedworks driver returns to Hampshire at the top of the standings and with memories of a productive weekend at the track last season fresh in his mind.

Ingram, 24, said: “It’s one of my favourite circuits because it presents an old-school challenge.

“We’re expecting an uphill battle on Saturday but hopefully we can pull it back on Sunday. We went there last season carrying maximum success ballast and came away with three top-four finishes.”

The form book favours the young upstarts and Ingram leads the way.

He notched a pair of podiums at Thruxton last year and has two wins to his name this season – and his eyes are firmly on spraying the victory champagne once again.

BTCC star Matt Neal set the pace last year with pole and a race-one win. But so far this year he’s been in the shadow of his team-mate Dan Cammish, who is 22 years his junior.

Chris Smiley will be one to watch after a best-ever result of second at Donington Park three weeks ago.

Adam Morgan is another who can never be discounted. He’s breathing down Ingram’s neck in second in the table, while Aiden Moffat is another young star to watch. ¬ÊThe BTCC is live on ITV4 tomorrow from 11.15am.
