THE family of Alfie Evans have been left heartbroken after gifts left at his memorial tree were stolen by sick thieves.
Hundreds of gifts were left near Alder Hey Children’s Hospital in Liverpool in memory of the 23-month-old toddler, who died last month of a degenerative brain condition.
Members of Alfie’s Army had left teddies, balloons, flowers, cards and candles at a tree in Springfield Park shortly after his death.
Many of the tributes were blue in honour of Everton FC, the Premier League club supported by Alfie’s father Tom Evans.
However, the memorial has now been ransacked. A member of the Alfie’s Army Facebook group slammed the “extremely disrespectful act”. They said: “We are sorry to say we have been made aware of people stealing gifts left for Alfie at his memorial tree.
“Army members left various gifts for our beautiful fighter and this breaks not only our hearts, but Alfie’s family’s heart that some people have done this extremely disrespectful act.”
They are now asking loyal supporters to replace the gifts.
Alfie died at the hospital on April 28 and a funeral was held on Monday. His parents had fought a lengthy legal battle to take him abroad for treatment.
His plight attracted worldwide attention, with Pope Francis among those to voice support.
