MPs in war on ‘store’s pay cut’
THERESA May has come under pressure to intervene over Sainsbury’s plans to overhaul its staff contracts.
A group of high-profile MPs has written to the Prime Minister, urging her to force chief executive Mike Coupe to “ensure that no staff will face a pay cut”.
Sainsbury’s is scrapping paid breaks and premium pay on Sunday for thousands of staff.
It is thought that
13,000 workers will lose
£3,000 a year. Penned by Labour’s Siobhain McDonagh, the letter is backed by Labour’s David Lammy, Frank Field and Shadow Business Secretary Rebecca Long Bailey plus Conservative Robert Halfon.
The letter says they are “completely dismayed” by the plans.
Simon Roberts, retail and operations director for Sainsbury’s, said: “We don’t believe that this letter accurately reflects how the vast majority of our colleagues are feeling.
“We have conducted meaningful consultation with around 100 colleague representatives and have made a number of changes to our original proposals based on their feedback.”
