Jose lines up £100m spree

- By JEREMY CROSS

JOSE MOURINHO is plotting a £100m spending spree before the end of this month in a bid to make Manchester United winners again.

The Old Trafford boss has targeted Tottenham ace Toby Alderweireld and Brazilian midfielder Fred to bolster his squad.

Mourinho wants a summer of upheaval following United’s poor season.

They failed to win a trophy and finished 19 points behind champions and bitter rivals Manchester City.

Mourinho wants to land the pair before the World Cup starts next month. Talks are advanced for both players and a £52.5m deal with Shakhtar Donetsk for defensive midfielder Fred (above) is close.

The South American had seemed destined to join City in January as a natural long-term replacement for Fernandinho.

But they were wary of being lured into an auction and boss Pep Guardiola is expected to sign Napoli star Jorginho instead.

United hope to land Belgium defender Alderweireld for around £55m but executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward is bracing himself for some hard negotiating with Spurs chairman Daniel Levy. They value their centre-half in the £75m category Liverpool paid for Virgil van Dijk.

But United will point out that Alderweireld will turn 30 next season and has just 12 months remaining on his current deal, which has a clause allowing him to leave for £25m next summer.
