SINGER Will Young has been banned from driving for six months after almost running over a man in a lay-by.

Motorist Rob Hogarth was forced to leap to safety when the former Pop Idol winner, 39, smashed into his parked car.

The racecourse manager claimed he could have died.

He said: “We were waiting for the police to come and he said, ‘Oh my God, you were so nearly killed’.

Speed

“It was only at that point that I realised yeah, he just about very nearly hit me.”

The crash happened on the A68 in the Scottish Borders in January.

Young appeared at Jedburgh Sheriff Court where his lawyer claimed the star would suffer major inconvenience if he could not drive. But his plea was dismissed by Sheriff Euan Edment, who handed Young a six-month ban.

The singer already had 11 points on his licence.

He was fined £600, and given five penalty points.

Young admitted entering a lay-by at excessive speed for the conditions after misreading the road.

Rob had been standing outside his car after parking up because he could not get up a hill in heavy snow. He said he was walking to his car door when the star came “straight towards me” and smashed into the back of the vehicle.

He said the impact “drove it up the banking at the side of the lay-by”.
