Norrie’s in form of his life

- By SCOTT COLEMAN

CAMERON NORRIE continued his rapid rise as he raced into the second round on his French Open debut.

Norrie, who only played his first professional match on clay in February, was leading 6-1 2-0 when opponent Peter Gojowczyk retired injured.

The British No.3 said: “He was hitting the ball big and hitting well. It didn’t look like anything was bothering him too much.

“I was playing great. I was serving really well. I think that was the best tennis I have played in my life. I was in the zone and not making any unforced errors, being the one dictating play.

“And I think if he’s winning that match, there’s no chance he’s retiring.”

Nervous

Norrie now faces French 15th seed Lucas Pouille on one of the Roland Garros show courts tomorrow.

“I love being the underdog and all the pressure is on him,” added Norrie.

“I’m sure I’ll be a little bit nervous because I’ll be on a big court, but I’m really looking forward to it.”

British No.2 Heather Watson shrugged off her poor form to reach the second round for the sixth time.

The 26-year-old, who arrived in Paris having lost nine of her previous 10 matches, swept aside Oceane Dodin of France 6-3 6-0.

Watson said: “Despite my season I was feeling so confident coming into this match, just the way I have prepared to the best of my ability.

“Once I got those nerves out of me in the first couple of games I loosened up and started playing how I have been practising.”
