AJ must pass the Tyson test

CHAMP IS BACK

- By CHRIS McKENNA

ANTHONY JOSHUA must beat Tyson Fury before he can claim to be the best heavyweight on the planet.

That’s the view of Fury’s promoter Frank Warren on the eve of the former world champion’s return to the ring.

Fury, 29, faces Sefer Seferi over 10 rounds at Manchester Arena tomorrow night, although few expect it to go anywhere near the distance.

Fury has not fought since he beat Wladimir Klitschko for the WBA, WBO and IBF titles in November 2015.

In the meantime, unbeaten Joshua now has all three belts.

But Warren said: “Until AJ beats Fury he is not the true champion of the world. He’s got the belts he’s picked up that Fury left behind.

“Until any of them fight Fury they’re not the true world champion. These guys have got to fight Fury, and the only way you can find out who is the best is to get in the ring.”

Warren believes there is no doubt Fury will regain his throne as the king of the division and rule over Joshua and WBC title holder Deontay Wilder.

He is even confiin dent Fury will be better than he was before his enforced lay-off. Warren said: “He has done 300-odd rounds, but that’s the gym.

“It’s about getting back the ring and getting that feeling back. It’s about improving mentally, physically and getting his timing better. That will take a couple of fights.

“I think he’ll be a better fighter now than what he was back then. With the age that he is, he will be the heavyweight of his generation – and I don’t say that lightly.”
